Actually thank you for kickstarting my kickstart....I got a little crazy with school and other things.

Ok, here's the story.


This year around August I realized it was time for my 'annual' haircut. I made arrangements with my good friend who had cut it the previous year. (Amy May, as it turns out =) who does give excellent cuts if you're looking!) My hair, which was getting below my waist at the time seems to grow about 6-8 inches in a year. The night before the scheduled cut I was out to dinner talking to some friends and I mentioned that I would be getting my hair cut the next day, and that it would be 6-8 inches that we'd be cutting. Someone helpfully reminded me that if I got 10 or more inches cut, I could donate it to an organization called Locks of Love, www.locksoflove.com they take the hair, and turn it into wigs for kids undergoing chemotherapy. The decision to cut 10 inches was a simple one, I'd always said that if I ever cut off my hair, that I'd shave it all off and donate it.

Sometime between that night, and the next day when I went to see Amy, I decided that it would be so much better if we just cut off an even foot, 12 inches. The longer the cut hair, the better use they can make of it. Right? Right.

Ok, so the next day when I went to see Amy my amateur hair cutter, I told her about the conversation the night before, and that we were going to cut off 12 inches and why. Amy, dutifully got out the ruler and measured off 12 inches and lopped it off. Great, excellent. This left me with about 16 inches of hair.

When I got home and put it into a ponytail I realized that it was a lot shorter than I expected. And that I wasn't sure if I liked it. The next morning in the shower, I REALLY noticed how short it was. During the day I noticed that it was short enough, that it could get into my eyes, mouth and face ugh. I quickly came to the determination that if it was still doing this by the time I left for Burning Man (about 2 weeks away) that I would shave it all off just before I left. Because Amy had cut my hair, and I didn't want her to think I was unhappy with what she had done, (well I was, but not because of her, she had only done what I asked for) I touched base with her, and let her know what was going on, and ensured her that I wasn't unhappy with what she had done, only with what I had asked to have done.

As you can guess by now, it was still bothering me the weekend before I left, what with all the last minute running around and preparing. So, Tuesday night, after I finished packing up the car, I went
in and took a shower, washed my hair, then used an electric razor to shave it off. in retrospect i should have put in two hair bands and cut in between them, then shaved off the balance.

My hair had been growing since 1989, and aside from family and a few friends from High School that I've kept in touch with, everyone who knew me, only ever knew me with long hair. So seeing me appear on the Playa with NO hair, was quite the shock all around. And then of course when I got back to work, they were also quite shocked, I'd been there 13 years and the hair was there the whole time. It also didn't help, that just before I'd left I'd given them notice of just over a month as i was going to be heading back to school. Incidentally, my school ID was taken before the haircut, but really, only my admissions rep had ever interacted with me, with the hair. hehehe =)

Since my return from Burning Man, I experimented with several different methods of shaving my head, from a couple of different electric razors, to some conventional 'gillette' style blades. I've finally settled on the Head Blade, using a shaving oil, though I'm currently trying out Headblade's Head Slick, I like it, but it's a lot more expensive than the oil was using so we'll see how long the bottle lasts.

I just don't know what I'll do if hair ever comes back in style.

Well, speaking as a MEMBER of this tribe. I really don't care, being a straight guy it really isn't something I'm interested in reading, but I'm also a grownup and know how to skip over things I'm not interested in =)

Speaking as the moderator of this quiet little tribe, I guess I ought to point out that this is not a tribe that's flagged as mature, and we should probably keep that in mind while posting here. Of course if there's widespread consensus that, that should be changed, well I can do that too, though it's not quite what I envisioned when I started the the tribe.
